1. Daily Session

Pescadors

So, there is this little Restaurante up along the highway in a very rough looking area that is next to a junkyard, welding shop and chopper shop. I have passed by this area many many times whilst heading out along the grand Camino to search for waves. I had been hearing for years that that place had great food, but was always scared to stop in and try out the food. So, about ten or fifteen years ago I pulled in and bravely walked through the door to some of the best smells my nose had experienced in a long time. I ordered some food and was shocked how long it took to arrive, come to find out everything is made from scratch! When the waitress brought me my plate, it turned out to be some of the best Mexican food I have ever had! The place is family run by three generations cooking, serving and bussing. I have become friends with the whole family now, and call the main cook "Momacita." Being as I learned to be fluent in Spanish in my teen years, I can carry a respectable conversation with Momacita and her family, and she now calls me "Baby Grande," sorta like her big Son! I look forward to going there and getting caught up on the goings on with her whole family. A couple of weeks ago, I was enjoying some Chile Verde with Momacitas homes made tortillas and overheard two fisherman talking about their days fishing trip to their favorite fishing spot, and how they were bummed because the waves were so big and they didn't do well. So I wiped the Verde sauce off my beard and went over to their table and asked them if I could buy them a Cerveza, which immediately made them happy. I pulled up a chair at their table and in my best Spanish started to ask them about their fishing spot, how often they went there etc. They told me it was a sorta long hike, and often had to push rattlesnakes off the trail with their fishing poles. They did say that the waves there were often a problem for them, the more they told me the more excited I got!! After the first round of beer, I asked Gonzalo, the more talkative one, if he would draw me a map so I could go there and see his Olas Grandes. He made me agree not to show or tell any other fishermen about their secret spot, and I gladly obliged! So Gonzalo drew this map on his place setting for me which really piqued my interest. A few days later I was chatting with the Knowles Brothers, Eric and Jason and told them I might have found a secret honey hole for us to hike into. Eric and Jason were very skeptical and reluctantly agreed to hike in with me. So on Halloween day we met up, drove for about a half hour and found the exact spot Gonzalo told me to park at. We made the hike in, which was a bit brutal, luckily we didn't encounter any rattlesnakes. When we got down to he coastline, the waves were there, but looked small and week, and it was threatening to rain with no sun, and the Boys didn't really want to go out at some unknown spot under such conditions, but I pretty much prevailed and persuaded them to paddle out. After a few waves, they were having a blast surfing an unknown spot without another surfer around for as far as my 600mm lens could see. There were however two fisherman there that were killing it hauling in so many perch it was cool. After about an hour, the sun started to peek out a bit, and the conditions improved. It was a really cool experience and Im sure we will return to what I have named "Pescadors." Thanks Gonzalo, the beers are on me next time at Momacitas.
